Recent recalls in the Pet Food Industry have raised interest among dog owners in home cooked diets for their dogs. Kauffman's Stress Protection Formula and Coat & Skin Enhancing Formula can play a vital part in balancing a home cooked diet for dogs.
Several key points should be taken into consideration when preparing a home cooked diet:
An Example Diet
A simple canine diet example developed by our Canine Nutritionist, Edward Moser, MS, VMD, DACVN (a.k.a. Chef Ned) is shown below. It includes your choice of either Kauffman's Stress Protection Formula or Coat & Skin Enhancing Formula. It is important to note that Stress Protection Formula or Coat & Skin Enhancing Formula will be the primary source of Vitamins and Trace Minerals and must be included to make the diet complete and balanced.
Since whichever supplement you choose will be the primary source of Vitamins and Minerals, it should be included in the diet at the higher usage level indicated on the label (Stress level or Maintenance Plus level). This level should be a minimum starting point and adjusted to the individual dog's needs. It is also important that neither supplement be overfed (no more than two times the Stress level or Maintenance Plus level).
Remember, each dog must be fed as an individual; adjustments will need to be made based on caloric needs and activity levels.
The Recipe
Prepare the following separately:
Allow rice and chicken to cool sufficiently to avoid burning dog's mouth. Mix thoroughly with the following.
