Why Should I Feed a Feeding Oil or Oil-Based Supplement?

Feeding Oils are a major source of digestible fat. High-fat diets provide several important benefits for horses. Most notably, in terms of energy density, fat supplies two and one quarter (2.25) times as much energy as the equivalent weight of carbohydrates or starches (traditionally supplied by grains). Fat is also much easier for a horse to digest than carbohydrates, as fat appears to be absorbed almost exclusively in the small intestine and apparently has no effect on pH in the cecum. Finally, fats are often referred to as “cool calories” or “calm energy” as they do not cause the spike in blood sugar similar to starches, sugars and other carbohydrates; therefore, you should not need to worry about making your horse “hot” or “hyper” when feeding fat.

Feeding oils are excellent sources of fats as they provide virtually 100% fat, so feeding a little reaps considerable benefits.  Some of the benefits you can expect to see are:

1. Enhanced quality and shine of the hair coat

2. Provides quality omega-3 fatty acids that horses without access to fresh pasture are lacking

3. Helps put on weight for a "hard" keeper with far less risk for digestive upset and other complications compared with increasing carbohydrate intake

4. Prevents older horses from losing condition due to their digestive tracts not working as efficiently

5. Broodmares in good condition will settle more easily and maintain the pregnancy with less difficulty.  They will also be able to deal with the stress of lactation better and her milk will be higher in fat thus helping her foal gain weight and keep condition

Which Feeding Oil or Oil Based-Supplement is the right choice for your horse?

Ultimately, the decision on which oil to supplement in the equine diet comes down to a cost:benefit analysis relative to purpose.  Kauffman’s Animal Health, Inc. blends and packages a variety of high-quality feeding oils (green/bold type in table below) for further manufacture of animal feeds or as supplements to top-dress daily rations.  Use of feeding oils in equine diets has been increasing in recent years, and a variety of oils are available for this purpose. 

Dietary supplementation of Omega-3 fatty acids has been shown to have numerous beneficial effects for humans, and more recently for horses.  The primary Omega-3 fatty acids of significance for horses are EPA, DHA and ALA.  Although ALA is an Omega-3 fatty acid (high in Flaxseed), conversion to EPA via the same elongase enzymatic pathway that converts linoleic acid (LA) to arachidonic acid (AA) is not as efficient; therefore, providing EPA and DHA directly is beneficial in equine diets.  The table below provides the relative proportions of LA, ALA, EPA and DHA in a few common feeding oils for horses.

* A number less than 1 means considerably more Omega-6 fatty acids than Omega-3 fatty acids; whereas, a number greater than 1 means more Omega-3 fatty acids relative to Omega-6 fatty acids.

Corn oil is the least expensive plant-based oil supplement used in equine feeds.  For decades corn oil has been used to mask powdered supplements and to provide additional calories, but in the last several years has been scrutinized for its extremely low Omega-3 content, and its high Omega-6 content which has been shown to have pro-inflammatory properties.

Soy oil tends to be intermediate in approximate cost as well as the Omega-3 to Omega-6 ratio, but the LA content is high and the Omega-3 is coming solely from ALA, making this a better choice than corn oil but a poorer choice than fish oil.  Because the Omega-3 content is primarily ALA, the health benefits garnered will not be as substantial as supplying EPA and DHA directly.

Fish oil has gained noticeable attention recently as an excellent source of additional calories for hard-working horses, primarily due to its Omega-3 fatty acid complement.  Fish oil is rich in Omega-3 fatty acids, namely EPA and DHA.  The following benefits have been realized in equine feeding programs that incorporate fish oil as a source of Omega-3 fatty acids:

• Less pronounced inflammatory reactions compared with those derived from Omega-6 fatty acids, specifically LA.

• Reduced inflammatory response in various joint conditions.

• Enhanced reproductive performance of stallions.

• Improved development of the fetal nervous system in supplemented gestating mares.

• Reduced signs of exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage (EIPH).

• Reduced likelihood of developing gastric ulcers.
